New Zealand investors increasingly assume their values are considered by the firms they invest with. Some are prepared to pay more, or even to accept lower returns, for investments reflecting social and environmental issues they care about. For a regulator, investment firms trying to attract such investors should clearly explain and deliver on any claims they make to be sustainable, responsible or ethical. If not, they risk misleading their investors – greenwashing – and attracting regulatory intervention. In this session, you’ll hear what the regulator does and doesn’t focus on when looking at greenwashing. We will also discuss how our greenwashing work is developing as the regulatory landscape expands to include compulsory and voluntary standards, local and international. And we will describe how we think, and how we believe investment firms can usefully think, about the complexity of managing member interests alongside exclusions.
